The City of Makati, in the Philippines, is one of the 17 cities that make up Metro Manila, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. Makati is the financial center of the Philippines. As the host of various embassies, it is also an important center for international affairs.
With a population of 529,039, Makati is the 16th largest city in the country and ranked as the 41st most densely populated city in the world with 19,336 inhabitants per square kilometer.
According to tradition, the first Governor-General of the Philippines Miguel López de Legazpi, while exploring a swamp near the Pasig River, asked for the name of the place but, because of the language barrier, was misinterpreted by theTagalog people. Pointing to the receding tide of Pasig River, the Tagalogs answered, “Makati, kumakati na,” literally meaning ebbing tide.

Makati became the financial center of the Philippines during the 1960s. Makati is home of the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Makati Business Club.

Although the city is noted for its cosmopolitan culture, it faces internal tensions owing to the wealth gap between residents, workers in and visitors to the newer part of city in the west, which contains the central business/financial district, and residents of the older part in the east, which is largely poor and where most of the slums are located.

Because of its cosmopolitan culture, Makati has become one of the well-known shopping destinations in Metro Manila. Major shopping malls such as the Glorietta, Greenbelt, and the Power Plant Mall are located in Makati.
The Rockwell Center, an upscale mixed-use property with condominiums and shopping centers. While Greenbelt is an upscale-luxury shopping mall with international stores such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Banana Republic, Zara, Tommy Hilfiger and many more. Just across Greenbelt, is another major shopping mall, called Glorietta. SM Makati is also located in Makati.

The Forbes Park neighborhood, originally developed in 1948 and Dasmariñas Village, first developed in the 1960s, are notable residences in Makati. A number of gated communities such as San Lorenzo, Urdaneta, San Antonio, Bel-Air, San Miguel and Magallanes Village are also located within the city. The Makati Shangri-La, Manila is a 5-star hotel managed by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, and is also the largest Shangri-La hotel in terms of room numbers, with 699 guest rooms and suites.
