HISTORY
Marikina city, commonly known as the shoe capital of the Philippines had made such a great development from the past few years, and the shoe industry in Marikina is still alive. Well everything that we have right now is because of our past, so we'll take a closer look at Marikina city's history.
According to the historian named Servando delos Angeles, the first settlers of Marikina are the descendants of Lakan Dula, known as the pre-hispanic king of Manila. It happened when Lakan Dula sent his descendants to faraway lands and river routes. The riverbanks of Marikina were also settled by river dwellers or "taga-ilog", these natives were discovered by tha Augustinians as they explored along the riverbanks during 1570's. Then during 1630's Jesuits arrived and there is when Christianity spread in Marikina, since the Jesuits have had the ecclesiastical control and supervision over the land.
It was then called Mariquina by 1687 and declared as a pueblo or town under the Spanish government. Don Benito Mendoza became the first Gobernadorcillo of Marikina in 1787 and had it's first Alcalde Capitan, Don Juan Gregorio in 1822. Another milestone was when Mariquina emerged as a town of shoemakers as Don Laurencio as known as "Kapitan Moy", the Father of Shoe Industry made and designed the first pair of shoes in Mariquina.
In 1898, Mariquina became the capital of Manila province as the Philippine Independence was proclaimed. Don Vicente Gomez became the Alcalde of Mariquina in 1900 and the next year, the name Mariquina was officially changed as "Marikina" after the Americans took possesion of the Philippines and Rizal was created. The first mayor of the modern Marikina was Juan Chayungco in 1938, and in 1956 Marikina was named as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines.
And the rest is history, as Marikina became a part of the National Capital Region in 1975. Marikina rapidly transformed when Bayani Fernando started as mayor of Marikina and in 1996 Marikina became a chartered city. The wife of Bayani Fernando, Marides Fernando became mayor in 2001, she also made a big impact in the city's progress. As of now, Marikina city is led by Mayor Del de Guzman and still Marikina City's industy is kept alive, the title " Shoe Capital of the Philippines" remains.
